Hey, I’m Malia!

I am a board-certified Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I’ve lived in Southern California and Salt Lake City, but am originally from Kahuku, Hawaii and am now based in Montana. I work with clients in both Montana and Utah, primarily via telehealth but with in-person sessions when available.

In addition to my private practice, I also teach courses at Montana State University-Billings, where I have been on faculty since 2011.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

Therapeutic Approach

I have experience working with many mental health conditions utilizing different modalities. I have specialized training in the treatments of trauma and PTSD utilizing TI-CBT. I also commonly utilize motivational interviewing, parts therapy, and EMDR.

However, I believe that approach is less important than the knowledge that your therapist both understands and accepts you simply as you are today. Recent research states, “The emerging picture suggests that the quality of the client-therapist alliance is a reliable predictor of positive clinical outcome independent of the variety of psychotherapy approaches and outcome measures.” (Ardito & Rabellino, 2011)

I believe it is not possible to receive the full benefit of therapeutic work if you do not have a strong connection to your therapist. Otherwise, it can be difficult to open up and feel heard. The therapeutic relationship is therefore essential.

Client Testimonials

Working with a therapist can be an intimidating experience at first. Here are what a few of my former clients have said about their experience as my client. I take a friendly, accepting approach rooted in relational therapy.

“Growing up as a male in a family that didn’t really talk about our issues, I’ve found it difficult to open up in sessions with my previous therapists. Malia’s easy style and calm environment helped to set me at ease, open up, and cope with the issues that had been plaguing me.”
